Objectives of the field visit:
Focusing on the Focal Action Situation, this visit aims to showcase how digital technologies are being used in agriculture—particularly within the viticulture and beekeeping and related processes.
The Living Lab “Smart Villages Network” connects farmers, researchers, technology providers, and public authorities. Over the years, this collaboration has evolved through projects that aim to support rural communities in building smarter, more sustainable futures. The lab emphasizes co-creation, prototyping, testing, and scaling digital innovations, particularly using IoT solutions in wine and honey production.
Main challenges addressed:
- Connectivity issues in rural and hilly areas
- Diverse microclimates within vineyards
- Testing digital solutions for beekeeping
- Innovation in beekeeping solutions.
Demo Farm 1: Beekeeping Cesar
With Codecs, we have partnered with an innovative beekeeper to tackle challenges related to bee nutrition (rapid mowing of meadows that limits the bees to find food, along with the impacts of climate and environmental changes). To provide better conditions for the bees, they are often relocated to remote areas, such as mountainous regions, where IoT technology plays a crucial role in monitoring hive conditions and supporting data-driven decision-making.
At this farm we are testing IoT technology for honey production. We provided beekeeper with a professional digital IoT scale, designed for convenient mobile measurement of hive status across three remote beehives. With this service he can access valuable insights that are essential for making informed decisions and optimizing beekeeping practices.
What to see:
- Tour of the apiary and honey garden.
- Demonstration of IoT hive monitoring.
Topics for discussion:
- The life cycle and behaviour of bees
- The role of bees in ecosystems
- Innovation in beekeeping / new services, products (example sparkling Mead: an alcoholic drink made from fermented honey using the traditional champagne method).
Demo Farm 2: Doppler Winery
Recently the farm reoriented to organic winemaking which aims to produce wines that reflect the natural flavours of the grapes and the unique characteristics of the vineyard while minimizing the impact on the environment.
At this farm we employ smart sensor and LoRaWAN technology for a resilient infrastructure addressing connectivity issues, rugged terrain, and diverse microclimates in same vineyard. Deploying microclimate, soil moisture, rain, and leaf wetness sensors across Doppler winery, our system transmits data to a dashboard, ensuring continuous availability and informed decision-making.
What to see:
- Sensor deployment in the vineyard
- Web and mobile apps for vineyard monitoring
- Digitally controlled wine cellar and distillery
Topics for discussion:
- Climate monitoring, soil analysis, water management
- Disease and pest detection
- Harvest planning and optimization
- Experience after two years of IoT use at the winery
